AN  INTERESTING  QUESTION!

This is a drystone wall (drystane dyke) on the island of Muck in the Inner Hebrides.  What comments would you make about this wall and how/why does it differ from the walls that we are currently building in Silverdale?

These dykes (drystane dyking in Scotland!) might appear 'upside down' to those of us familiar with the Silverdale wall.  However, they are generally single thickness and surprisingly stable - binding together with friction - despite looking so unsteady.  It would seem that livestock, and the black-faced sheep especially, appear not to want to try to climb them!   Look out for variations in walling designs as you travel across the country.

Torrisholme School  -  12 July 2009

Two views of the Torrisholme School site - developed from an empty mown grass playing field to a three dimensional mix of grass, individual trees, woodland and pond area, with a corresponding improvement in habitats and wider opportunities for school staff, children and the wider residential community to enjoy the environment.  There are even reports of a local fox and cubs!  This has happened with 20-25 years of regular input from LDCV!  The surrounding houses are almost obscured!
